Clinical Training

The centerpiece for clinical training in the first year at CHS is the Inpatient Gastroenterology Consultation Service. Three months is spent on this service, in addition there are weekly continuity clinics and a half-day of outpatient endoscopy. The intent of the outpatient experience is to provide a broad exposure to the faculty in a setting conducive to training consultant gastroenterologists.

In the remaining clinical training period there are 5 months of hepatology, 2 months of elective, and 6 months of mentored research time. There is a large exposure to patients with complex tertiary care type problems.

The faculty supervises all endoscopy procedures. Fellows have the opportunity in the first year to do all endoscopic procedures with the exception of ERCP and ultrasound. The Endoscopic Hemostasis Service directed by Dr. Dennis Jensen attends on all major GI bleeds with the fellows. The four or five faculty in this rotation are experts in all aspects of hemostasis. Endoscopic biopsy pathology is a strength at the Center for Health Sciences with a dedicated GI biopsy lab and GI pathology Fellows available for biopsy review, and an outstanding GI radiology service.

In addition to the Friday morning seminar series, fellows rotating through CHS attend three other core weekly conferences: GI pathology, journal club and a clinical case conference.
